When preparing a parcel for shipment, it is important to remember how much the packaging matters: it must comply with all the norms and requirements of the sending and destination countries and of the shipping method. The packaging must keep the contents safe throughout delivery. Items should be packed tightly and neatly.
If a parcel is large in size but light in weight, the charge will be based on the volumetric weight.
Below is information on how the volumetric weight is calculated.
Volumetric Weight Calculation
- The cost of shipping a parcel depends not only on its weight, but also on the dimensions of the box.
- If a parcel is light but has significant dimensions, the shipping cost is charged by the so-called “volumetric weight”.
- The “volumetric weight” is determined by multiplying the three dimensions of the box — height, length and width, in inches — and dividing by 139, as shown in the illustration.
- Example 1. A box measures 18×20×24 inches and weighs 19 pounds. 18×20×24/139 = 62 Lbs. The volumetric weight is 62 pounds, so the shipping cost is charged by the volumetric weight — 62 pounds.
- Example 2. A box measures 16×19×20 inches and weighs 44 pounds. In this case the volumetric weight does not exceed the physical weight, so the charge is based on the physical weight.
